Show Notes:
What is your favourite movie of all time?
Coming to America – it’s one of the all-time greatest with Mr. Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy must have played about 6 different characters in the movie. One of the other reasons why I love it so much is that it speaks to productivity. Not only is it comical but it makes so much sense business wise as well.
How did you become such a Productivity Evangelist?
All my life I have had the entrepreneurial bug. I have been around some great people; I’ve had some great opportunities, great mentors in my life. I Grew up on the streets of Miami, Florida. My parents are from Haiti. All my life I’ve had the opportunity to seek after my goals. Very early on in my life I needed a MAP (mentality, attitude and focus) which is like a GPS. When you have the right mentality, you have the right attitude and the right perspective on life it is easy to navigate through life. Many people ask, “How did you do it so early?” I am one of those people, when I look around me, I’m a sponge, I’m a life-long learner. I don’t like to make mistakes. When I see people make mistakes I like to write that down in my book so I not only learn from the good that people do but I also learn from their mistakes. My life has truly been a wonderful blessing simply because I’m in tuned to my surrounding. Life is going to happen to us all but the question is what do we do with it. What is your perspective?
Where other people gave me encouragement or motivation or even when they were trying to discourage me I used that as fuel for me to actually blast off with my potential, passion, and productivity. That’s how it all started for me at a young age.
Your definition of productivity and why are you so passionate about it?
Productivity has thousands of different definitions but for me it is simply doing more with less. Getting the job done the right way in as less time as possible. It is a lifestyle, not just a mindset or a fad. It tells or shows people that you have endless possibilities. There are multiple avenues to get to a destination but what is the most productive way to get to a destination. That’s where life truly is different. I talk about it often because it is the only thing I know. Finding and helping people to live their best life, enabling them to do their place of passion. For me that’s what true life is all about.
What would you say to us to not be distracted?
Productivity is a state of mind, it must be perceived as achievable prior to it being achieved. It cannot be achieved if you’re not focus. This is what I often use with my clients – Fixed Focused and Dedicated. Without focus, it is impossible to see a destination; it’s impossible to see a route, to get from point A to B unless you’re willing to wander. Wandering means you don’t know where you’re going, you’re just walking. It’s frustrating to want to get somewhere without having the coordinates to get there. It’s called wasted space, wasted time. When you get laser focused, it helps you to cut down on that time. It teaches you to do more by doing less. Today we have the Global Positioning System (GPS) because somebody took the time to be laser focused on every destination that gave the steps, tools and strategy to get there even if you didn’t know how and as entrepreneurs, business owners, productivity people – focus is absolutely important.
How can we ensure that we are staying focused?
Start investing time, you don’t spend time…you invest time. When you spend your money do you expect to get it back? When you invest your money, you’re expecting some sort of return. We all get 24 hours in a day. What do you do from the moment you get up to the time you lay down. It is imperative to get at least 6 hours of rest. Take care of your health. Invest your time wisely. Everybody is going to be vying for your time but you are going to have to be discipline in your time. It’s all about preparation. After preparation, you need to have a plan then you have to develop it. If you take the time to be discipline to prepare the night before you won’t wake up wondering what am I going to do today? We have to be disciplined.
How can you inspire us to hang on to the plan we made?
Your plan should always bring you to some financial gain for your business and your life. When you start making a plan it should be connected to your passion. The question that will help you stay on track with your plan is, “What am I doing to make this world a better place?”. After that you can say the second the statement, “I will no longer leave money on the table. When you deviate from the plan you deviate from your profit and mission. That’s how you stay fixed focused and dedicated to your plan.
Which of the 21 Power Plays in your book stand out?
I love collaboration as it is the new currency. It helps you to go global. For me, I like to say “keep it simple”. I love Richard Branson, he said all you have to do is solve a problem. Learn what you need to learn and do what you need to do and make it simplistic.
How do ‘keep it simple’ and collaboration tie back into productivity?
The practice and principles taught are all in an effort to make you more productive. Life is very simple but we make it complete because we start competing instead of complementing one another. These are truths that will help you to complement instead of compete. We want you to be the best version of you possible.
Final words on how to a successful person?
Gain clarity, visibility and structure. Make sure you are immersed in your community. Make sure you focus on your influence. These are the things that help businesses be successful to go global. These are the five problems businesses face – A lack of clarity, lack of visibility, lack of structure, lack of community and lack of influence. If you’re going to use your life, your business to be more successful and productive then you need to gain these things. You do it in such a way that it is not only gain for yourself. You do it because of your gifting to help other people so that they can gain from what you have learnt. This is a principle that cannot be broken when you look at success and significance.
William Barclay – they are two great days in a person’s life, the day they were born and the day they find out why. Everything that we do, we are literally edifying and intensifying our gifts. What legacy do you want to create? The plan should always match the message you’re bringing to the world; what do you want to be remembered for and what legacy you’re trying to create.
