On June 15, 2025—Father’s Day—I completed my very first official 5K as part of a small but determined Grace to Grow team.
While I’m no stranger to regular walks and jogs, this race was a special milestone: it brought together our team’s spirit and commitment in a new, purposeful way. We may not have been running side by side (think “distributed excellence” rather than a tight pack), but we were united in our goal and energy.
The experience was rich with insights that translate directly to leadership—and yes, there were plenty of smiles along the way.
8 Leadership Lessons From My First 5K
1. The Power of Finishing: The ‘Finisher’ Medal
Crossing the finish line, I received a medal that simply said “finisher.” Not “winner,” not “fastest”—just “finisher.”
Leadership Insight: In leadership, the ultimate recognition isn’t about being first; it’s about seeing things through. Sometimes, just crossing the finish line is the real victory.
2. Flexibility Comes From Ambition
Runners could walk, but walkers couldn’t run.
Leadership Insight: Aim high and prepare for more than you think you’ll need. Leaders who stretch for bigger goals have the flexibility to adapt, while those who play it safe may find themselves boxed in by their limits.
3. Starting Is Winning
Just showing up at the start line felt like a win. (The snooze button almost had me.)
Leadership Insight: Leaders distinguish themselves by being willing to start, even when the outcome is uncertain.
4. Pace Yourself
Sprinting out of the gate is a rookie mistake—trust me, my legs confirmed this.
Leadership Insight: Sustainable leadership is about managing your energy and resources, not burning out in a rush to the finish.
5. Embrace Discomfort
There were moments I questioned my life choices, but pushing through built resilience.
Leadership Insight: Growth happens outside your comfort zone. Leaders who persist through challenges inspire teams and build cultures of grit.
6. Celebrate Small Wins
Every kilometre completed was a milestone worth celebrating.
Leadership Insight: Recognising incremental progress keeps teams motivated and focused on the bigger picture.
7. Community Matters
Support from the Grace to Grow team—even when we weren’t side by side—made a real difference.
Leadership Insight: Leadership is a team sport. A supportive community strengthens resolve and multiplies success.
8. Preparation Pays Off
Spoiler alert: The race is easier if you train for it.
Leadership Insight: Leaders who prepare are ready for the unexpected. Don’t just wing it—unless you’re aiming for the “most creative finish” award.

Scripture Spotlight ✝️
Hebrews 12:1 (NIV):
“…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”Leadership, like a 5K, is about perseverance—showing up, pushing through, and finishing well (even if you need a nap afterwards).
The Science of Leadership & Endurance 🔬
■ Leaders who set incremental goals and celebrate small wins boost team motivation by up to 30%.
■ Harvard Business Review says leaders who pace themselves are 40% less likely to burn out.
■ Gallup found that strong communities at work increase profitability by 21%.
Fun Fact of the Week 🤔
Did you know?
The average marathon finisher is cheered more enthusiastically than the winner, because everyone loves a story of perseverance (and possibly because they look like they need the encouragement).
