A Season of Soul Growth
My current journey with Dr. Cindy Trimm’s 40 Day Soul Fast has been nothing short of transformational. Years ago, the book felt like any other on my shelf. But now, in this season, its truths penetrate deeper—especially the story of the Chinese bamboo. I’ve always loved this analogy, but recently it became more than a metaphor: it’s become the mirror of my own leadership and entrepreneurial journey.
The Unseen Work of Leadership and Business
The Chinese bamboo doesn’t so much as break the soil for five years. During that time, all growth is underground, developing the roots required to support its extraordinary, rapid ascent when the time is right. When bamboo finally shoots up, it soars—sometimes 90 feet in a matter of weeks. Its “overnight” success is years in the making.
In leadership and business, this is the hidden work:
Building expertise: Countless hours of learning, researching, trying and failing quietly.
Cultivating relationships: Genuinely caring, connecting, and building trust long before it’s required.
Staying faithful in the “waiting”: Watering ideas, refining vision, and practicing patience when immediate results feel elusive.
Looking back, my “waiting seasons”—the pitches that didn’t stick, the projects that fizzled—were preparing me. It wasn’t failure; it was endurance training, root-building, and character formation. Patience, resilience, and unwavering belief aren’t luxuries; they’re the foundation for meaningful impact.
When Patience Pays Off
Growth, momentum, and clarity often appear “suddenly,” but they’re never truly instant. Every “yes” in my life—the doors that are now opening, the breakthroughs I’m experiencing—are the visible results of years spent developing roots no one saw.
Success is never magic. It’s patient, consistent, unseen labor. The bamboo’s leap was no miracle; it was—inevitably—the conclusion of faith-filled effort and daily nurture. Every leader who’s harvested a breakthrough knows this secret: the process makes the result sustainable.
Trusting the Process, Not the Clock
True leadership trusts the process, not the clock. There’s grace and wisdom in letting go of instant gratification, in finding contentment in steady progress, and in celebrating small, daily victories. The lesson of the bamboo—and of this 40-day journey—is that legacy is built below the surface. It’s a quiet triumph, preparing you for a season of visible fruitfulness.
What roots are you nurturing in this season? What patient work are you called to continue, knowing it will eventually bear fruit?
Podcast Reflection 🎙️
From a Sheet and Towel Packer to CEO This week’s episode of The Entrepreneurial You spotlights a phenomenal story of hidden labor and breathtaking growth. Scripture Spotlight ✝️
“The end of a thing is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.” — Ecclesiastes 7:8 (NIV)
A reminder that enduring through the quiet years is the true test—and reward—of leadership.
The Science Behind Bamboo Leadership
Bamboo’s success hinges on invisible root-building. Researchers have found that endurance, deliberate daily actions, and healthy foundation-building are top predictors of lasting leadership impact. Patience and adaptability—like bamboo’s flexibility—are critical in volatile environments; they allow leaders to weather setbacks and pivot when needed.
Fun Fact of the Week 🤔
Did you know? Some species of Chinese bamboo can grow up to 35 inches in a single day during their “explosive growth” phase—but only after years of silent, steady rooting.
