Why “Plan B” Was My Saving Grace

Hosting my fifth top-tier leadership event stretched me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Despite my track record, the build-up felt more like weathering a perfect storm: confusion, broken promises, and those special disappointments that only come with big visions and bigger expectations. Yet, out of that whirlwind, the solution wasn’t found by doubling down on old tactics—it was embracing Plan B.

Once the dust settled, I quieted my heart and actually listened. In that stillness, clarity hit: the path I’d called Plan B was the direction I should’ve chosen all along. Moving from crisis-driven action to mindful strategy mirrored the power of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR)—easing stress, activating my clearest thinking, and opening the door for new creative breakthroughs.

This turbulent journey led to a sudden, liberating “Aha!”—Plan A in disguise had been hiding in plain sight. That’s the magic of cognitive restructuring: when familiar approaches break down, new and better solutions emerge, fueling true innovation.

Leadership Lessons: Clarity Grows in Community

1. It Still Takes a Village

Even the strongest leader needs a team. This event solidified the power of distributed leadership; research supports this, showing that shared responsibility enhances collective problem-solving and adaptability, especially in unpredictable times.

2. Purpose Is Magnetic—Share It Early and Often

When my “why” was clear and front-centre, my community rallied. People bought into a vision, not just a list of logistics. This transformational leadership principle forged a team united by shared purpose and passion.

3. Intrinsic Impact Is True Freedom

The genuine reward came when I stopped worrying about doing things for appearances and focused on the work itself. Self-Determination Theory tells us this shift—from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation—leads to higher creativity, deeper fulfilment, and long-lasting success.

Gone are the days of just “planning.” Now I execute with conviction and clarity. 

Every disappointment was a stepping stone to my true, most powerful Plan A.
