If you could be in the movie of your choice, what movie would you choose and what character would you play?

The Pursuit of Happiness…Will Smith.

Why would you want to play Will?

It’s a realistic depiction of the struggles, the hardship, the disappointments that you go through as an entrepreneur. Will Smith in that movie depicts the drive that you need in order to be successful. You have to be discipline, you have to be relentless, you have to persevere, you have to endure, to overcome, to overtake. There are some giants that you have to face when trying to pursue destiny. God has a plan for each of our lives but the enemy also has a plan and his plan is to steal, kill and destroy our destiny. When you want to pursue happiness, when you want to pursue that thing which you have been created to do, you’re going to have to face a lot of giants.

As an expert in Financial & Money Management & Goal Setting…why do we need to set goals?

I’m a Kingdom entrepreneur; a lot of foundations and principles I use and how I establish my business have been based on the word.  In Habakkuk, it says “write the vision make it plain”. I have to have a goal, a road map, directions to get from one place to the next. When you set a goal, you have to begin with the end in mind.  Along the way, I will need steps to take me to the destination. When you set goals you are threading on unfamiliar territory. You need to know that on my destination there is going to be some detours but I know that although I have some road blocks and accidents along the way, I have a GPS to tell me what my next step is. If you fail to plan you plan to fail. Not only do I goal set in business, I do that for personal life, my career, my attitude, my relationships, for my ministry. I goal set in every area of my life.

What areas of our lives do we need to set goals?

Every area of or lives. Before I got married to my husband, we sat down and created a roadmap for our household. We came together and set goals. You have to set goals if you want to be successful in every area of your life. Every area of your life where you don’t set goals or you don’t have a vision statement for that, expect confusion, expect hardship, expect frustration.

How important is a Vision Statement in the goal setting process?

The bible says without a vision people perish. Part of what I do is help people who feel stuck in their jobs, people who are aspiring entrepreneurs and visionaries, and people who have a vision, to go from stuck to unstuck. Unfortunately, 90% of society have dreams but they don’t have a vision statement. They don’t see how it can come to pass and so they prostitute their talents on a job that doesn’t fulfill them. If you don’t have a vision you’re going to die. I’m not talking about a physical death; hopelessness is death. When you’re living life just to pay the bills to run that cycle of getting up, going to work, come home to watch TV to go to sleep to get up and go to work again, it’s a cycle and you’re not fulfilling your purpose. God created every one of us with a unique assignment and calling, if you’re not fulfilling purpose or vision you die.

How do we set goals for optimum results?

I like to go with the SMART system…when you set a goal you have to be specific. If you’re setting financial goals, you have to be specific. For example, if I want to replace my monthly income to bring in $600 per month by the next 6 months, it’s measurable and attainable and within a specific time. Don’t set yourself above your belief level so that you fail. In order to achieve your goals, you have to be willing to sacrifice some things. When you set goals sometimes you have to force yourself to do things that otherwise you wouldn’t do. You have to break habits. What’s my motivation behind it because you have to have a ‘why’ – the driving force that keeps you going and motivated even when you feel like quitting. You might say I need to increase my income because I want to send my children on a vacation, or I want to take my children out of public schools into the private system…whatever that reason might be for you…your why has to be greater than you. It has to be that thing that keeps you up at night. That driving force that keeps you going when you feel like quitting. When you are pursuing destiny, when you set goals they are going to be giants along the way, mountains that you have to climb; it is going to be uncomfortable; it is going to be difficult but your why, your motivation is going to be that thing that keeps you pressing forward even when you feel like quitting.

Commitment is doing the thing you said you would do long after the feeling you’ve set it in has left you. Whether you’re a successful CEO or an average individual thriving to be successful, everyone deals with that one thing. What distinguishes the successful person from the unsuccessful person is their commitment level. Many times, we get so frustrated on the journey that feeling comes.

You must have an action plan to keep you going. That action plan is equated to the GPS. On your journey, there is a detour because of construction on the road. On the road of life, there is going to be construction in the way in many ways.  There are obstacles that come in our way to hinder us from getting us to our destination. But with a why, a road map and an action plan you will be a force to be reckoned with. You will make it to that expected end but you have to be determined, diligent. The bible says a man who is diligent in his business will stand before Kings; he will not stand before mean men (meaning average). If you want to be great, successful, you have to master diligence.

What are some considerations to bear in mind when talking about money?

Money answers all things on the earth. In order to make things happen, we need money. Our education system doesn’t teach us how to manage money. But it is so essential that we learn how to effectively manage it to successfully maneuver life and live comfortably.

What happens when we deviate from our goal of proper money management?

When you set a goal and deviate from it, you get feelings of inadequacy. The bible says a righteous man falls down but he gets back up again. You’re going to mess up, you’re going to make mistakes; things are going to happen to cause you to deviate from the plan. It’s ok. Don’t make a habit of it. If you deviate from your plan, get yourself up, go back to that goal and say is this attainable for me? If you agree that you can handle this then go back to the goal that you set for yourself. Forgive yourself for that mess up and start all over.

Main Take-Aways:

  • You have to have a ‘why’ – the driving force that keeps you going and motivated even when you feel like quitting.
  • When you set a goal, you have to begin with the end in mind.
  • If you deviate from your plan, get yourself up, go back to that goal and say is this attainable for me?

What is your favourite movie of all time?

Coming to America – it’s one of the all-time greatest with Mr. Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy must have played about 6 different characters in the movie. One of the other reasons why I love it so much is that it speaks to productivity. Not only is it comical but it makes so much sense business wise as well.

How did you become such a Productivity Evangelist?

All my life I have had the entrepreneurial bug. I have been around some great people; I’ve had some great opportunities, great mentors in my life. I Grew up on the streets of Miami, Florida. My parents are from Haiti. All my life I’ve had the opportunity to seek after my goals. Very early on in my life I needed a MAP (mentality, attitude and focus) which is like a GPS. When you have the right mentality, you have the right attitude and the right perspective on life it is easy to navigate through life. Many people ask, “How did you do it so early?” I am one of those people, when I look around me, I’m a sponge, I’m a life-long learner. I don’t like to make mistakes. When I see people make mistakes I like to write that down in my book so I not only learn from the good that people do but I also learn from their mistakes. My life has truly been a wonderful blessing simply because I’m in tuned to my surrounding. Life is going to happen to us all but the question is what do we do with it. What is your perspective?

Where other people gave me encouragement or motivation or even when they were trying to discourage me I used that as fuel for me to actually blast off with my potential, passion, and productivity. That’s how it all started for me at a young age.

Your definition of productivity and why are you so passionate about it?

Productivity has thousands of different definitions but for me it is simply doing more with less. Getting the job done the right way in as less time as possible. It is a lifestyle, not just a mindset or a fad. It tells or shows people that you have endless possibilities. There are multiple avenues to get to a destination but what is the most productive way to get to a destination. That’s where life truly is different. I talk about it often because it is the only thing I know. Finding and helping people to live their best life, enabling them to do their place of passion. For me that’s what true life is all about.

What would you say to us to not be distracted?

Productivity is a state of mind, it must be perceived as achievable prior to it being achieved. It cannot be achieved if you’re not focus. This is what I often use with my clients – Fixed Focused and Dedicated. Without focus, it is impossible to see a destination; it’s impossible to see a route, to get from point A to B unless you’re willing to wander. Wandering means you don’t know where you’re going, you’re just walking. It’s frustrating to want to get somewhere without having the coordinates to get there. It’s called wasted space, wasted time. When you get laser focused, it helps you to cut down on that time. It teaches you to do more by doing less. Today we have the Global Positioning System (GPS) because somebody took the time to be laser focused on every destination that gave the steps, tools and strategy to get there even if you didn’t know how and as entrepreneurs, business owners, productivity people – focus is absolutely important.

How can we ensure that we are staying focused?

Start investing time, you don’t spend time…you invest time. When you spend your money do you expect to get it back? When you invest your money, you’re expecting some sort of return. We all get 24 hours in a day. What do you do from the moment you get up to the time you lay down. It is imperative to get at least 6 hours of rest. Take care of your health. Invest your time wisely. Everybody is going to be vying for your time but you are going to have to be discipline in your time.  It’s all about preparation. After preparation, you need to have a plan then you have to develop it.  If you take the time to be discipline to prepare the night before you won’t wake up wondering what am I going to do today? We have to be disciplined.

How can you inspire us to hang on to the plan we made?

Your plan should always bring you to some financial gain for your business and your life. When you start making a plan it should be connected to your passion. The question that will help you stay on track with your plan is,  “What am I doing to make this world a better place?”. After that you can say the second the statement, “I will no longer leave money on the table. When you deviate from the plan you deviate from your profit and mission. That’s how you stay fixed focused and dedicated to your plan.

Which of the 21 Power Plays in your book stand out?

I love collaboration as it is the new currency. It helps you to go global. For me, I like to say “keep it simple”. I love Richard Branson, he said all you have to do is solve a problem. Learn what you need to learn and do what you need to do and make it simplistic.

How do ‘keep it simple’ and collaboration tie back into productivity?

The practice and principles taught are all in an effort to make you more productive. Life is very simple but we make it complete because we start competing instead of complementing one another. These are truths that will help you to complement instead of compete. We want you to be the best version of you possible.

Final words on how to a successful person?

Gain clarity, visibility and structure. Make sure you are immersed in your community. Make sure you focus on your influence. These are the things that help businesses be successful to go global. These are the five problems businesses face – A lack of clarity, lack of visibility, lack of structure, lack of community and lack of influence. If you’re going to use your life, your business to be more successful and productive then you need to gain these things. You do it in such a way that it is not only gain for yourself. You do it because of your gifting to help other people so that they can gain from what you have learnt. This is a principle that cannot be broken when you look at success and significance.

William Barclay – they are two great days in a person’s life, the day they were born and the day they find out why. Everything that we do, we are literally edifying and intensifying our gifts. What legacy do you want to create? The plan should always match the message you’re bringing to the world; what do you want to be remembered for and what legacy you’re trying to create.

Main Take-Aways:

  • Productivity is getting the job done the right way in as less time as possible.
  • Start investing time, you don’t spend time…you invest time.
  • The question that will help you stay on track with your plan is, “What am I doing to make this world a better place?”

What is your favourite thing to do in your downtime?

My favourite thing to do is read. Reading is such a vital part of success. When I can sit alone and relax my mind I love to read and go to the beach though I don’t do the two things at the same time.

What is one of the books you have read that stood out for you?

Definitely two – Ed Catmull’s Creativity Inc, that book blew my mind; I love Pixar movies – I’m a big animated movie fan…Ratatouille is my stuff. The book is really about corporate culture and how do you really build a great company. The next book deals with personal finances, the Richest Man in Babylon. The ideas really revolutionalizes how I saw finances, how I saw work. It has translated into a level of success for me.

What accounts for your success?

I think all things flow from the mind. Our value proposition is trying to understand people and to understand that there is only one boss and that’s the client. I try to stay on the cusp on anything new in digital media. Our sole value proposition is our commitment to excellence, which is our core philosophy. Kaizen – caring about the team which is so very important. As a young company, resources are limited but we do simple things like birthdays, game nights to try to spur feelings of affinity and culture; esteem within the team so that they can deliver the best results. Our work ethic, attitude towards maintaining a growth mindset so that we keep learning and keep honing our craft, attitude towards how we treat our team members and our clients as they are important and our attitude towards communication and our core value of excellence.

How important is it to focus on customer needs?

As a young CEO, being able to temper your ego is important. Some companies treat the clients as though they have to do business with you. That’s not true. Customers have many choices and they choose to do business with you. The real delineator is how you treat the customer.  At all times, we must maintain professionalism when relating to your customer. Show them that you care. Don’t see them as money. Seeing my clients’ business grow warms my heart. I started Digita with the mindset to elevate the design space using the power of digital media to augment your brand. The first cheque that I got started the company…

You don’t scale off getting big deals but by getting recurring customers. I started doing thank you cards for birthdays, etc, to show that we care beyond just getting their money. Small tokens showing appreciation made a difference. It’s about helping people.

Is digital marketing replacing traditional media?

There is a dynamic interplay happening and you have to assess digital media looking at the adoption curve and generation groupings because generations take in info differently. Digital media really represents change. The internet came along having this set of network…all these websites are kind of disconnected, you have to find your way to them. The distinction between digital media and primarily social media is you’re on one platform. You have these networks, people already live there. We have 7-second attention spans. How do you penetrate the minds of people multitasking and operating in a multi-screen environment?

Facebook, if you’re watching a video, you can see the minute or the second that that video peaked in terms of viewership. Facebook is giving you actionable data that you can draw inferences and then make informed decisions to optimize your marketing. Facebook has the most sophisticated advertising technology in terms of interest based targeting. They have a plethora of tools. For example, you can upload an email list to Facebook and target people there. Because of their connection with WhatsApp, as soon as you add somebody’s number you can use that as a node of info to target people. Digital media is really the evolution of the internet. The internet was just a space for information. Digital allows it to be contextualized and now you can focus attention where you want it. The attention is on Facebook already and that’s what marketers fight over anyways.

With all the plethora of social media, how do you know if you are using it correctly or even which platform to choose?

Every platform has its audiences and benefits. It depends on your brand and what you’re trying to sell. If your brand is heavily based on visuals, Instagram may be the place for you. If you’re looking at Millennials, Instagram is the main place for that population. The networks age up. As soon as parents get on Facebook, children get off. Snapchat currently has a lot of youth demographic. You have to be self-aware, know what the respective networks offer and you have to jump in. You can’t sit on the sideline; you have to become proficient and create engaging content. You have to be aware of your brand voice, who you are trying to reach. You have to be real and you have to pay.

How can you keep current with all the social media platform and their changes?

You have to have a growth mindset to be in this industry. Facebook just recently reduced its organic reach. If you have over 100,000 fans you’re getting a 2% reach. You have to do paid advertising. When you are trying to create content, you want consistency, you want to have your voice and the intent of your content.  Look at the data to know if you are winning. Do you have Facebook Pixel on your website to track responses? Many people are using social to drive traffic to your website.

Share about your speaking business

Acume arose out of a need both internally for me and externally for what I saw in society, not just for general motivation but for an understanding of self as that’s where all things flow from.  You have to be progressively focused on improving yourself daily. The world is a negative place and you have to insulate yourself from that through activities. And the people that develop daily habits of motivation are the ones that win and stay in a positive mental space at all times.  I would talk to my class and they would always leave motivated. I would get testimonials from my students. I was always trying to pick people up. After a while, the resounding sentiments was, “this guy is motivational”.  I said if I could do this for individuals I could take it to another level. At the time, I was listening to a lot of Les Brown, Jim Rohn, Tony Robins, a lot of different people. I like to say that I speak from one mouth but many minds. I would just be reflecting life and things come to me. To become who you are destined to be you have to divorce who you are.  I listen to a lot of motivational material and from that sprung the desire to really help companies. I love speaking, love to see people’s lives changed.

Pieces of advice?

Have a mind that equips you for success. The limitless mind is one committed to daily growth; it is a mind that is positive and eradicates all perceptions of weakness and loss. You don’t see failure as failure but as lessons. It’s really a mind that understands that you have to surround yourself with motivational people, people that inspire you; motivational content; content that drives you and everything regarding preserving the veracity towards life. Next work ethic – desire and obsession have to be part of your daily pro quo. I read at least 2 hours per day; do affirmations and meditate. I’ve made work my best friend. It really is about hustle. Have a vision of yourself that is beyond where you are right now. See your highest self and work daily to become that person. It’s possible.

Main Take-Aways:

  • Understand that there is only one boss and that’s the client.
  • Know your voice and the intent of your content.
  • Have a vision of yourself that is beyond where you are right now.

What’s your story?

I’m originally from Compton, California; it was known as a pretty bad place. Back in the 80s when I grew up there it was known as the worst city in America. They literally called it a war zone. We were surrounded by gangs, drug dealers, etc. I was raised by a single mother. I met my father when I was 7 years old and he was serving time in a California State penitentiary. He got there because he was one of California’s biggest drug dealers at the time. Fortunately, your start doesn’t have to determine your finish.

I did get in trouble but I encountered what I called a disruptor. All throughout our lives, we will find people come into our lives to disrupt us if we are going the wrong way. My first disruptor was a California State Judge. He said, “young man you are going nowhere fast and I’m going to give you an opportunity to transform your life”.

When did you decide to change?

The military sent me to Germany. I began to experience a lot of firsts – the first time being away from home, the first time being in another city, the first time being in another country. Even though I was 8,000 miles away physically, mentally I was still in Compton, California. I ended getting in trouble again where I met my second disruptor. He told me, “young man you’re getting ready to mess up your life but I’m not going to kick you out, I’m going to allow you to come work for me and I’m going to mentor you”.

One of the first things he asked me was, “What are you going to do with this opportunity?” That was the very first time anyone ever posed that question to me. Where did I see myself going? Where did I want to be in life? He sat me down and made me think about my life. I grew up in an environment where I didn’t think I would make it to my 18th birthday. I didn’t think beyond my 18th birthday. I never thought about my future and this Sergeant Major, Sergeant Melvin Babbs, made me started to think about my future.

What’s your mission?

My mission is simple, it is to help as many serious entrepreneurs gain clarity and how to help them live their best lives. Our company provides strategy & solutions to help them create their best lives

Using a CAR to get to where you want to go

When we think about Clarity, Action, Result, one of the first things we have to ask ourselves is, “What does my future look like?” We have to realize that each and every one of us lives in 3 dimensions, our past, present and future. When we look at these 3 dimensions, we have to ask, “ What is my reality for my future?” “What do I want to look like?” What happens to most of us is that we begin to look at our past which is always with us. When we begin to talk about our future we often go back to the past to look for qualifications meaning, wow, “Can I really do this?” We gave to get clear on our past. What part of our past support this new future that you want.

I learnt from my past that women are strong…this is the aspect of my past that I brought into my present. It was an advantage for me. I learnt how to make a dollar go really far. I learnt how to sacrifice and learnt how to go without for a long time.

I also recognized that I will make mistakes and so I have to bring accountability into my life. Accountability is what we called coaches and mentors and people to help us along the way. Once I decided what my future was going to be, I say, “Who do I need in my life that can mentor me, that can help me along the way. I started finding examples of individuals. Early on these mentors were books, cassette tapes back then, recordings till I could actuality find physical mentors.

Results, that tell the story. Are you progressing are you not? I check my results every 90 days. Am I accomplishing what I set out to accomplish?

When did your journey as an entrepreneur began?

I was in the military and once I finally got this clarity I had a decision to make. Was I going to continue in the military or was I going to start my company? For me it was very clear, it was time to leave the military and start my company. In January 2002, I started my company after leaving the army in September 2001.

What has been your worst moment as an entrepreneur?

I have made bad decisions. I was excited about moving into this new office space which I didn’t negotiate very well to begin with. I paid too much for this facility and it put a strain on the company for a long time. I signed an 18-month lease for an enormous amount of money without a plan on how to pay it off. I was so excited about getting into our own building, having our own office space. I didn’t learn the art of negotiation

What is the one thing you would say to prospective entrepreneurs as a definite must before they leave their job to start a business?

It would be to create a CAR. Get clear, how are you going to replace your income. “How are you going to replace your insurance?” “How is it going to impact your family?” “What exactly are you going to be doing?” Then you want to have accountability, talk to people, ask questions, listen to shows such as this. A lot of time we move out of passion. But passion will dry up very fast if you don’t have any profits. You haven’t earned it until it crosses your checking account. Until you see cash in hand, don’t count it.

How do you bounce back from a bad decision?

One of the things I do is to take a step back…it is perspective. I look at the mistake that was made. I ask myself, “Did anyone die?” Sometimes I need to go to my mentor, get some accountability and ask some questions on how we get out of this. One of the easiest things is that I’m doing what I love. Because I’m doing what I love it’s easy for me to bounce back. A lot of people aren’t doing what the love and so when they make mistakes or fail, they use it as get-out-of-jail card. When I make mistakes, I learn from it and get back in the game.

What is your definition of success?

Success is so subjective to everybody. I narrow it down to two words and it’s “enjoying life.” But as a caveat to that, enjoying life means you really have to get clarity. So many of us have been told what success is, we’ve read the magazines and movies and we get in pursuit of things that we don’t want. If you really get clarity, there’s only a few things that you need in life to be successful. I love being around my families and friends; the ability to travel, if I want to go out to a restaurant I can do that. But above that, there’s a lot of stuff that I really want to do. I love the ability to go out and shop every day if I want to but I’m not shopping every day, I’m working every day. When you really peel back the onion and ask yourself what do you really want, and get clarity on it, that’s success!

When I move back to the US from Europe, the ability to work from the comfort of our home was fulfilling for me. We saved thousands of dollars by working from home.

Final words

Invest some time to create the life and business you love and be proud of. This is our life, this is a dress rehearsal. Let’s make the best of it.

 Main Take-Aways:

  • You haven’t earned it until it hits your checking account.
  • Invest time to create the life and business you really want.
  • Build a CAR to take you to your goal; get CLARITY, have ACCOUNTABILITY and check your RESULTS.
