Today, I want to talk about access. The more I grow as a leader, the more I accept and appreciate that access is a privilege-not a right.
Let’s be honest: In our hyper-connected world, everyone wants a piece of your time, your energy, your wisdom, your network, and yes, even your WhatsApp number! It’s perfectly okay-even wise-to take a pause before you respond to someone’s email, WhatsApp message, or any request for your attention or introductions. Wanting access is natural, but protecting your mental space is essential. Your energy is finite, and it’s your responsibility to steward it wisely.
As my leadership journey deepens, I’ve learned a crucial truth: Not everyone should have the same level of access to you. In fact, some who once had front-row seats to your life may now need to be moved to the balcony-or even outside the theater entirely.
Why? Because access is energy. If you don’t protect your mental space, you’ll find yourself drained, distracted, and unable to show up as your best self for those who truly matter.
Lessons from the Access Equation
1. Boundaries Are a Leadership Superpower:
The most effective leaders aren’t the most available-they’re the most intentional. They know when to say yes, when to say no, and when to say “not now.”
2. Access Changes as You Grow:
Just as you wouldn’t give your house keys to everyone you meet, you shouldn’t give everyone equal access to your time, energy, or influence. It’s not about arrogance; it’s about stewardship.
3. Protecting Your Space Protects Your Purpose:
When you limit access, you create space for reflection, strategy, and creativity. You also model for your team the importance of self-care and focused leadership.
Scripture Spotlight ✝️
Proverbs 4:23:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
This ancient wisdom is more relevant than ever. Guarding your heart-and by extension, your time and energy-is not selfish; it’s essential. When you protect your inner world, you lead your outer world with clarity and strength.

The Science Behind Selective Access 🔬
- Decision Fatigue: Neuroscientists have found that every decision-even who you give your time to-uses mental energy. Too many “yeses” lead to poor choices and exhaustion.
- The Law of Diminishing Returns: The more people who have access to you, the less meaningful each interaction becomes. Quality over quantity is the winning formula.
- Psychological Safety: Leaders who manage access well foster environments where trust and deep connection can flourish-because people know their time with you is valued.
