Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how much I have changed as a person and as a leader.
There was a time when I was extremely vocal-never hesitating to let everyone know exactly how I felt. Looking back, I realise I may have been overcompensating for years when I had little self-confidence, self-esteem or any self-anything at all. It felt empowering to finally stand up for myself, to be bold, fearless, and courageous, regardless of the consequences.
But with the gift of hindsight, I see that this approach, while liberating, sometimes hindered my progress. I stepped on the wrong toes. I don’t regret standing up for what I believed in, but I now recognise that not every battle is worth fighting out loud.
Fast forward to today: I still value courage, but I’ve learned the wisdom of discernment. Instead of always voicing my thoughts, I reflect more and speak less. I pick my battles carefully. Now, when I do speak, people listen because my words are measured, meaningful, and rooted in deep introspection.
Recently, I spent three years in an environment where many things clashed with my core values. I didn’t rush to confront; instead, I prayed, observed, and assessed. When the time finally came for a “sweaty palm” conversation with the organisation’s leadership, my words carried weight. Though we disagreed, my perspective was met with respect and appreciation. Those who know me well said, “We knew you thought this through.”
The lesson? True bravery isn’t always about speaking up immediately. Sometimes, it’s observing, reflecting, and knowing when your voice will make the greatest impact.

Scripture Spotlight ✝️
Proverbs 17:27-28:
“The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered. Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.”
Wisdom often lies in knowing when to speak and when to listen.
Reflection:
True wisdom isn’t about how much we say-it’s about the impact of what we say, and when we say it. Restraint, listening, and thoughtful communication are marks of maturity and strong leadership. Sometimes, the wisest thing we can do is simply listen and reflect before we speak. When we do, our words carry more weight, build trust, and foster deeper connections. Your journey from outspoken to reflective is a powerful example of this wisdom in action.
The Science Behind Strategic Silence 🔬
- Research shows that leaders who practice restraint and deep listening are more likely to earn trust and foster collaboration.
- Teams led by reflective leaders report higher satisfaction and lower conflict.
- Neuroscience reveals that pausing before responding allows for more thoughtful, emotionally intelligent communication.
Fun Fact of the Week 🤔
Did you know?
The average person listens for only 17 seconds before interrupting. Imagine the impact if we all listened just a little longer!
