Help! I Have Too Many Ideas: 5 Ways to Stay Focused On Your Business Idea
Is your brain flooding with too many business ideas and you just can’t seem to concentrate on just one?
We all have experienced it. Those moments when inspiration hits us like a lightning bolt. The next thing we know is that we convince ourselves that we are the next Albert Einstein. So what do you do when you are the victim of idea tsunami? What happens when you have too many business ideas to choose from?
Simplify the Process
First things first.
Write your ideas in a journal and see if they overlap. For example, you are thinking about starting an online handcrafted business, but you would also like to do personalized gift items.
You could merge both by creating a business that specializes in creating handcrafted personalized gift items that can be sold online. Merging business ideas is just one of the ways to allow you to simplify the process.
Create Your Idea Box
Never say to yourself that your idea is stupid. Create a box for your ideas. For example, you could have a box for work, one for your family, and another for your passion project.
Whenever you have an idea you would write the idea down and place it into the relevant box.
If you notice that certain boxes remain empty, or haven’t gathered many ideas, then it’s time to move away from that box and focus on the box that is generating the most ideas. This gives you the chance to devote your energy into one area.
Idea Think Tank Sessions
No man is an island, no man stands alone. This quote made popular by the English Poet John Donne isn’t just a nicely sounding cliche. There is much truth held therein. That is why it’s important to surround yourself with friends and colleagues you can trust to share your ideas for feedback.
You can create your own think tank sessions at your home, online such as via Skype or YouTube hangouts for example where ideas can be discussed and picked apart.
According to John Hampton, Entrepreneur and Investor, encourages us to “Partner up with a friend and set goals or bounce ideas off of each other on a regular basis. Figure out if you want to chat once a week or once a month. If you can’t commit to that, Facebook groups are an easy way to compare notes on a set day”
Idea Due Date
Everything has a beginning and an end. Flirting with an idea for too long may result in you losing the interest and drive necessary to execute. Perhaps you’ve heard it said that the longer the distance between ideation and execution, the more likely it is that you will default on going through with your idea. Mel Robbins has a nice way of talking about this in her 5-second rule theory.
Assign a due date and stick to it. This will prevent procrastination and as you move towards the deadline you will find way to fine tune the business idea.
Commitment
Be mindful that focusing on too many things at once can exhausting. Pick one idea at a time and commit to completing that goal. Even if this goal is to do research and test your business idea, at least completing the initial market research gives you clarity as to whether or not you should pursue the idea further.
